Bits & bytes for April 5th 2024

I have a link below to an open tab around opaque mechanics. And increasingly I'm finding that almost a third of modern games are spent explaining mechanics to the player, gently, before they can ramp up difficulty. And with open world games, that's probably even weirder an explainer curve.

But then, a huge swathe of games do not explain basic things. They assume a lot about their gamer. They assume the game is understood, the mechanics are understood and the player actually only needs to tweak the dials on it.
