Bits & bytes for August 2024

StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty. It was a game that spawned a love of eSports for me, and I'm sure many others. I was never massively into RTS games beforehand, but my word I was massively into this. The original skipped me, and I'm not entirely sure why because I loved it when they re-released it many years later. But StarCraft II is one of those games I just adored. I was never good at it, but it was so fun, the mechanics were buttery smooth, and everything about the lore was beautifully crafted.

Two key memories for me start with following the professional player, NaNiWa. He was an absolute tool, but a brilliant player. And to my recollection, I never saw him actually win a major tournament. But his play style, interviewing style (very Scandi) and the fact that he was a Protoss player engaged me. That and the volume of Team Liquid swag I got, and still occasionally dip into to this day.

The second was entering a tournament with work, hosted by a YouTube personality. It was called the 'After Hours Gaming League' (AHGL) and we entered it with HubSpot, where I worked at the time. There was a mix of players in there, and I was by far the least skilled in my company. But I had passion. And if I recall correctly, I had one of the maddest games in the tournament against an equally bad player from IBM. We were tactically sound but mechanically poor and both playing Protoss. I had whittled his army all the way down but got stuck with 1 unit while he had a small army off in the distance. I could have won but my clunky understanding of the map lost me out at the dying embers of the match. And thus, we were knocked out when two more competitive players got together and the HubSpotter lost.
