Bits & bytes for October 15th 2023

I was reflecting this week on how wonderful retro gaming is. I can't wait for my kids to experience the joys of emulating 16-bit games on my various Analogue devices. It's so much fun to boot up a cartridge, too. And frankly, the quality of games from those bygone eras is just so high. One thing I do miss for the nostalgic gut-punch are Spectrum ZX games. They're not hard to emulate, but because they require a keyboard, it's hard to really settle in on the sofa.

I was playing the Cyberpunk DLC this week, which I think I'm nearing the end of. And it's wonderful. Not just because the story is compelling and the world created in the area of 'Dogtown' is fun. But because CDPR spent an enormous amount of time fixing bugs, upgrading systems and making the RPG part of the game make more sense. And they made the world overall more 'world-like,' less AI-driven game-esque. And the driving is far, far better.

One bug I bumped into was a call to talk to 'Mr. Hands' at his nightclub pyramid. But the bug meant that I couldn't use the lift. Like the waypoint marker on the map was effectively pointless for me. But the Mr. Hands missions were on the map so I could plough-on anyway. PC players could noclip through to the meeting. But PS5 players were stuck. A quick Google shows this is a common bug. But in fact, it's not a bug. The game just explains the mission awkwardly. The missions/side-jobs are on the map already, and you have to complete 3 of them. Then Mr Hands will contact you and you're set to meet him. Which, in turn, tees up the final run on the DLC content.
